Letters of Support
Bows Letter
May 13, 2007
To the Boulder County Commissioners:
I have lived in Boulder County for 36 years and currently reside on Magnolia Road. In the past, I wrote the Home Rule Charter for the Town of Ward, was a member of the Boulder County Consortium of Cities, and served as Boulder Countys representative to the Colorado Baseball Commission.
Since I moved to my current residence seven years ago, I have attended approximately a half-dozen house concerts at Greg and Debbie Chings house.
As you know by now, house concerts are a national phenomena that allows acoustic music artists to support themselves through low overhead tours by playing for local audiences on a donate what you can afford basis. I was saddened to hear that based on the complaints of one resident (who makes a habit of complaining about everything) you have chosen to side with Graham Billingsleys illogically reasoned arguments and his selective enforcement (What about pooled contributions for clowns at birthday parties, Open Studios, home schooling teachers, author's signings, wine tastings, group cooking lessons, or group yoga instruction?) approach and ban such concerts.
We would also note that by taking this position you are asking all of us to burn gas driving to Boulder to attend concerts featuring artists selected by the media monopolies.
However, as I understand it, you are amenable to reviewing the draft house concert code prepared by the Chings counsel. Great!
I would urge you to consider the disruption you have chosen to perform on our community, not to mention the Chings expenses dealing with this absurdity ($20,000) -- based on a subjective interpretation of a subjective code -- and expedite your review, rather than waiting until September.
Sincerely,
Bob Bows
